Mallory Horne Collection

Size: 1 box, 1 cubic foot Biographical: Mallory Horne was the first politician since Reconstruction to serve as the leader of both the Florida House and Florida Senate. Horne was born on April 17, 1925 and earned a law degree from the University of Florida before serving as a fighter pilot during WWII. Elected to the House in 1955, he served as Speaker from 1962 to 1963. He was elected to the Senate in 1966 and served as president from 1973 to 1974. Having lost a campaign to the U.S. Senate in 1974, Horne became legal counsel to Gov. Lawton Chiles in 1990 and proved to be instrumental in helping pass legislation to collect money from tobacco companies. He passed away in April of 2009 due to lung cancer.[1] Summary: This collection consists of five reel-to-reel tapes that were donated by Horne. They include recordings of various sessions in the 1960s as well as one unmarked tape. The Museum currently does not have the equipment necessary to play these tapes.
